abstract: In this paper, the author seeks to understand
how image sensors are utilized in an ADS. Particularly, it focuses on
the manner in which image sensors acquire the environmental information
necessary for safe and efficient vehicular operation. The work contrasts
the two prominent image sensors: the CCD and CMOS detectors, focusing on
the shift from CCDs to CMOS in ADSs since the latter is less power
hungry, works at a faster rate, and is easier to implement. The paper
then goes further and compares new CMOS sensor technologies such as High
Dynamic Range (HDR), Noise reduction and Event-driven Vision Sensors
which enhance system performance under dynamic situations. Furthermore,
the study also looks into the use of image sensors in the perception,
decision-making, and control of ADS where the communication and
integration with other sensors are brought up in creating a complete
model of the surroundings. The paper concludes with a discussion on the
use of image sensors in ADSs, particularly in enabling parking and
navigating complex weather conditions.
